I walked down the street in the hot sun. I was on a search for kids to bring back to the community center for our Thursday tutoring—we had a little extra help today and it is always our goal to reach as many children as possible.
I was on my way back, with kiddos in tow, and decided to stop at one last house to see if a little girl named Tiana wanted to join us.
“Hey Tiana! You wanna come to tutoring today?” I asked.
“Miss Kenzie!! I want to, but I have to go to this thing…I go to this place and this thing and learn about God…but just on Thursdays!”
I’ve been thinking about what she said all afternoon, and it makes me smile. It makes me smile because I get to learn about God EVERY DAY, not just on Thursdays. And I don’t have to go to any different place, I can just walk out my door.
Living in intentional community in the inner-city has taught me more about God than all of the church I have ever gone to (and I have gone to some awesome churches). I get to see first hand the brokenness of our world, and the incredible ways that God is redeeming it. I get to see the poor, the oppressed, the widow, the orphan, and I get to be amazed at God’s awesome provision and protection. I get to see miracles in the form of children praying and thanking God for the gift of life, children who stumbled over basic words now able to read entire books, donations to our community center that are so generous it makes our heads spin.
I get a taste of God’s love every time I open the gate and the kids charge at me for hugs, faces full of joy and excitement.
I get a taste of God’s grace every time I have to hunt down one of our wild little boys and discipline them for their latest shenanigans.
I get a taste of God’s hope when I see how fiercely some of the parents care for their kids, and how desperately they want more for them.
I get a taste of God’s promise every time I walk down the street and see beauty in the brokenness and poverty. “…blessed are the poor….for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 5:3).
Wow God. I am so grateful that you and I don’t just kick it on Thursdays. And I am so grateful that you have given me a home where I have no choice but to learn more about you each and every day.
